2017 Vintage Longbottom H Syrah
90 Points

This vintage is a blend of two regions, but going forward all fruit will be from the Adelaide Hills. A rich nose of raspberry, rhubarb compote, black currant cordial, flowers and cola lead to a supple and relatively approachable palate. It is woven with soft but supportive tannins, plummy fruit and spicy oak. Drink now-2027.

2018 Vintage Longbottom H Chardonnay

Radiant gold in colour, the classy Adelaide Hills chardonnay is polished, bright and food friendly. It takes a few minutes to open in glass, and shouldn’t be sipped too cold, but at its best it offers ripe lemons and oranges, white spice, honeysuckle, some seashell reduction and some vanillin oak notes. The mouthfeel is buttery in texture, supported by spicy oak, buoyed by bright acidity and with a long finish like the salted rim of a citrusy cocktail. Drink with a wide range of dishes until 2027.

2017 Vintage Longbottom Magnus Shiraz

The Longbottom ladies’ top red is a big rich number (after all, it’s from two warm wine regions in South Australia) but it also shows restraint and complexity, just as you’d hope at this price point. A deep well of cassis, blackberries, black pepper, licorice, savoury spice and graphite is framed by toasty oak. It’s definitely not shy on the alcohol side of things, and it coats the tongue with more plush black fruit, but the muscular tannins are chalky and fine, their power setting this wine up for a long life. Leave this alone for now, however. Drink 2021-2029.
